Credit slang – the word should correctly be spelt ‘dissociation’ – referring to the removal of third party data from a person’s credit file at the request of that person. A financial association is often created by a joint account or a joint application. The quickest way to dissociate is to contact the credit reference agencies and request that the financial association is removed.
They will then check between the other agencies to check whether they have any evidence on their files of any financial associations (such as joint accounts) and in the absence of finding any evidence, the details relating to the other persons will be removed from your credit reports at all three agencies. The process takes a month or two before all records are updated, and the credit report of the third party will subsequently have no impact on your credit applications.
